MATCH BLOG – Kidderminster Harriers 2 Chester FC 2

Chester scored two in two minutes to make sure the amazing cottage pie wasn’t the only positive to take away from Aggborough. Both sides looked lively in the opening exchanges but then some truly woeful defending from Chester at two corners meant Kiddy took the initiative and started to relax into the game, creating occasionally and keeping Chester at arms length. Thank God for second half’s. A red, a missed pen and two Chester goals in the last ten minutes meant we took a point home. Here are some thoughts…

1. Iwelumo

Just woeful. Truly an immovable object. Unable to jump, pass, shoot or take a pen – probably the worst I’ve ever seen taken by a Chester player. Dribbled towards the goal. I wasn’t at Braintree where, by all accounts, he was immense but every time I’ve seen him he hasn’t been up to it. Compare him to Hobson who is better on the ball, jumps for headers and runs for most lost causes and I just can’t see why Iwelumo is starting. Vast improvement needed.

2. Corners

Utter shambles both attacking and defending. Defending was clearly more of a worry today. I thought Roberts was fouled in the initial header but the lack of a challenge afterwards was depressing and the second, spooned in the air by Hall after he tried to jump over one of our players, wasn’t great either. Other than that Hall was pretty decent again but perhaps this is his weakness?

3. Taylor

Liked the look of him today. Struggled a little in his first two games but seems to have got used to the pace now. His cross for Hobson was brilliant.

4. Overall

I actually think today we looked a lot better defensively. Clearly set pieces are a worry but Brown and Kay made very few mistakes and the full backs looked alright as well. Midfield was a little worrying when trying to break up play but did really well to continually recycle possession to keep Kiddy on the back foot throughout the second half (ok there was ten men but you still have to do the job). We did need more movement up front today but when Riley came on that started to happen and with Mahon back that aspect should improve again.

I’m actually struggling to decide whether we were quite good today (in general pattern of play) or Kiddy weren’t great. I’m going to go down the optimistic route.
