MATCH BLOG – Chester FC 4 Bishops Stortford 1

A scintillating hat-trick from on loan Craig Curran won the three points for Chester after an even first half. Ben Mills opened the scoring after just 5 minutes with a wonderful placed touch into the corner of the net after a Dave Hankin cross. Stortford equalised 20 minutes later after a quick free-kick found Stappleton who dug out a cross for Reece Prestedge to head past Danby to make sure the sides went in level at the break.

Some clever substitutions after the break saw Curran bag a hat-trick, the third of which was a ridiculously emphatic finish. Here are some of the highlights of the match.

First half

One of the more even halves of football we have seen at the Exacta. Must admit I was impressed with Stortford – clear game plan, organised and not bad on the ball. I don’t see them finishing 17th. Was a very good performance from them. I don’t think we played badly in the first half but we were missing our usual polish on our play which we saw in the second half.

Bringing on Marc Williams and Craig Curran just before the hour completely changed the complexion of the game. Before they came on the game was fairly even but their presence added an extra attacking option which we lacked before. They were more direct and their pace against tired legs ripped apart the Stortford side. Obviously the sending off helped but by then we were 2-1 up so it’s safe to say the change did make a difference.

Was so tiny! Never seen a pocket sized ref and was really funny to watch him back-peddle across the pitch whenever their massive striker Stappleton was complaining about something (which was often). He wasn’t too bad either although he needs work on giving advantages. Did confer with his linesman well for a few key decisions – the penalty that never was and the sending off.

Absolute blinder that. First goal he smacked it home after the rest of the team had tried to scramble it in, second was prodded in after the ‘keeper couldn’t handle a Mills shot and the third, wow. Hammered into the roof of the net after some brilliant work by Sarcevic to put him in acres of space. Really glad we have got him for another month.

Jimmy Soul

Soooooooo funny. Was making an amusing gesture towards their assistant manager. Got a fair few cheers from the crowd that.
