Chester took yet another stride towards their third title in a row with a solid win over play-off candidates Altrincham. A neat interchange between McGinn and Jarman meant Chester went one up before the break when McGinn smashed the ball past the ‘keeper. Dom Collins put the game beyond doubt midway through the second half after making a nuisance of himself in the box to win the ball back and place it in the corner of the net. Here are a few things we noticed from the match.
1. Dom Collins
Really nice to see him come in and do so well after being on the bench for a while. Really like watching this boy play and it is credit to Horan and Linwood that they have kept him out of the side. Collins and Horan managed to keep the Alty strikers quiet, mostly, and Dom even had a nice finish at the other end. Was close between him and McGinn for MOTM.
2. Away fans
Was lovely to see some for once! Been a rare sight down at the Exacta since we reformed but the 250 or so Alty fans made a fairly decent noise and I hope they had a nice time. Really wouldn’t mind if they came up with us as the away day there was my favourite (I wasn’t anywhere near the minor trouble) and they were a decent side which were a good test for us – unlike many others in this league.
3. Tough tackling
Thought they gave us more of a game at their place and today they spent a lot of time going in a bit late. Not complaining too much about that (although there were a few let go which really shouldn’t have been) but it would have been nice if the ref actually knew the rules of the game. Was giving free kicks for hard but fair challenges and letting blatant fouls go – for both sides. Lucky he didn’t have any major decisions to make as he would have definitely got it wrong and there was no hope with the linos either. Giving offsides for backpasses. Muppet.
Nice to see a few players who haven’t had much game time get on. Was a good decision to bring on Scott Brown and Ashley Williams to tip the midfield battle in our favour just when Alty looked like they were going to give us a few late scares. They battled well to stop Alty’s flow and was another tactical victory for Mr Young, or should that be Sir Neil? Be interesting to see the changes for the next match!
