CUP FINAL BLOG – Chester FC 2 Stalybridge Celtic 1

Chester completed the league and cup double with a solid win over a competitive Stalybridge side in the Cheshire Senior Cup. An Antoni Sarcevic penalty and a Tony Gray strike from an insane angle ensured the Cheshire Senior Cup was coming home tonight. Here are a few thoughts from the game!

Was very good I thought – got the pen and the red card right after Sarc was bundled over in the box and stopped the game getting too scrappy after a few big tackles went in from both sides. There was a bit of a debate down near me about another Chester pen for handball but to be honest I thought it had hit Horan’s hand!

Tony Gray

Man of the match for me. Worked hard and his goal was from a stupid angle. There was someone recording the match tonight so we should be able to see it again in all its glory. Been great to see him do so well and take his chance after only playing bit parts when he first came here. He is the prime example of why players should put their head down and graft for a place in the side rather than bitch and moan about it on social media.

Their 11.

Sorry I didn’t catch his name but he looked pretty handy! Scored a great goal past Fearon after taking on Dom Collins and nearly did it again after Collins dithered on the ball late on (apart from those moments Collins played well, honest). Was strong, quick and had a nice touch.

Cheshire is coming home

Great to see us win another cup and it has been a while since we won this one (85 years – thanks tannoy man!). Was quite a relaxed atmosphere which was weird and quite nice for a cup final. It was also nice to see all those glory hunters (including me) who had missed all of the earlier rounds at the final. Probably about 1000 Chester there – only 300 more than the “disgraceful” attendance in an earlier round!

Title charge

This cup is never going to be high up on the list of Chester fans priorities but it really has been important to us this year. It has kept the momentum of our title charge running when we didn’t have many games on because other teams were catching up from the awful winter weather. In a weird way these extra fixtures probably helped us win the league!
