MATCH BLOG – Halifax Town 0 Chester FC 2

Chester turned around their fortunes after a dismal performance just two days ago to beat Halifax. A Matty Brown header and a Tom Peers diving header secured the points for the Blues who thoroughly deserved to win. Halifax did come close twice to scoring but two good saves from Worsnop denied them and Chester had the better of the play and the chances. Here are some thoughts…

1. Peers

What a great header and it is really nice to see one of youth products getting their first goal for the club. Took it really well and it is good to see him getting a fair few chances off the bench. Came on for Hobson, who I thought played well today – bullying their defenders and holding it up well, and took his chance from a great cross from Menagh. I bumped into Cal McIntyre after the match and he was made up. Said Peers was rubbish in the air for him and that he might have cried a little after it went in. Bless him. Very passionate. Deserves the credit as do the rest of the youth set up.

2. Menagh

Was my MOM today. Ran his socks off and provided that bit of quality for Peers to head home the second. A proper chalk-on-his-toes winger who has looked lively off the bench recently so he was good to see him get a chance, giving Mahon a much needed rest. On the other wing Richards struggled in large parts of the game I felt so perhaps Mahon can switch sides and Menagh can get a run in the side.

3. More direct?

To me, today we looked more direct than usual. We were looking for the head of Hobson a bit more than normal but he had more support than he did against Altricham. It worked in reliving the pressure on our back line which has been a problem in recent weeks and gave our defenders more time to regroup. Halifax came at us hard after the half time break but only managed to get two real openings, both well saved. Brown was the pick of the defenders and I thought Touray had a good game on the left.

4. Two days

How can we look so different two days apart? Baffling. Roll on the new year though!
