MATCH BLOG – Chester FC 1 Forest Green 2

Chester lost out in a fairly tight game to the richest vegan team in the world. “Fat bastard” (quote) John Parkin missed a penalty early doors after Jon Worsnop mistimed a dive at the feet of their striker who was through before he saved the resulting weak effort. Frear put the vegans ahead just before the end of the second half with a nice finish after a Parkin header set him through on goal. Chester equalised on 65 minutes through a Luke George header from a Rooney freekick but Chester couldn’t stop Forest Green’s great start as they grabbed the winner with ten left on the clock after the midfield temporarily disappeared. Here are some thoughts…

1. Fat bastard John Parkin

Unsurprisingly after nearly killing Michael Kay with his elbow last year everybody’s favourite fat bloke on a pitch got a fair bit of stick, especially after he missed the pen. He was clearly very good up top and brought other players in around him very well. Too good for this level. I’m sure he’ll look back on his career as a series of games where people call him fat with fondness.

2. Midfield

I don’t think the midfield of Shaw, George and Rooney works. It drops too deep and no one runs forward with the ball. They can all break up the play, especially George and Shaw, and can distribute it well, especially Rooney, but they don’t drive forward with the ball enough and link with the forwards. Sometimes you need someone to just take the ball on and run at defenders. With that midfield we have Shaw and George deep protecting the back four and Rooney deep trying to distribute the ball forward. There isn’t anyone to take a 10 yard ball forward because of that it means that the midfield are struggling to string passes together because they have no space. For me one of Shaw or George should be taken out and Thomson should play. He is more attacking minded and could make a real difference.

3. Right hand side

Thought all of our most dangerous passages came from the right yesterday. Tonge played well defensively, Higgins did well on the right of midfield although occasionally didn’t look that comfortable there – especially from the long punts towards his head. Mahon occasionally came over and wove a bit of magic. Problem was our left. Hunt did very well defensively yesterday but Mahon was in the middle and on the right too often (even though he did play well) which meant all our attacks came down one side practically. This meant the middle of the park was tighter than normal and easier for FGR to defend.

4. O’Hanlon

Tough debut for him and I think he did ok. Won a few headers and looked decent on the ball. Unfortunately he had almost no service which meant it was a tough day for him. He did lose the ball in a few silly places yesterday from a few lapses in concentration so that’s something for him to work on. Surprised we didn’t see Tom Peers earlier though.

5. Kane Richards

Where was he? Played well the last two and doesn’t make the bench?

6. Racine yellow

Absolutely smashed Higgins in the face with his elbow. Straight red card for me. No question about it. Parkin should have had one last year for nearly killing Kay so they seem to have got away with it again. Frustrating.
