A class debut goal from loanee Matty Hughes capped a solid Blues performance. There were scary moments for Chester, Worsnop saved well point blank and a the defence (sorry I couldn’t see who it was) scrambled a ball off the line, but overall we dictated the play and deserved the three points. Here are some thoughts…
1. Matty Hughes
Considering he had such a good game the name on many fans lips at the end was Matty Taylor. Poor lad, he scores the winner and people mix up who he is.
He had a good debut. Ran well and looked like what we had been missing – someone to run in behind the defence. Was caught offside a fair amount but to be fair to the fans by me they kept on applauding and kept on encouraging until he scored a lovely turn and shot inside the area. Looks like he can strike a ball and him and I’m looking forward to seeing him and Hobson playing up top together.
Was that goal offside? Looked alright to me. Apart from that, and a couple of Mahon shots we were mostly from distance which could be more of a problem against better sides. Thought McConville should have a pen though. One of those that is clearly a freekick anywhere else on the pitch but not given in the box. Aldershot’s two best chances both came from deep crosses which was our downfall on Saturday so something to work on in training for the side.
After a shaky start to the season the back four and keeper are starting to look really solid. Still a few mistakes in them, but I suppose at this level any team which passes out of defence are going to make a few. Nice to watch when it goes well like tonight though.
