Chester FC crashed out of the FA Cup after taking League One Barnsley to a replay. In truth the Blues were poor on the night and couldn’t match up to their displays in the competition so far giving Barnsley too much space in midfield and giving the ball away in our own half repeatedly. Barnsley had a number of chances and went 1-0 up after a good block from Matty Brown put it on a plate for Hemmings to smash home and stretched their lead in the second half after the ball was given away giving Jennings a chance to slot the ball past Worsnop. They finished off the scoring from a mazy run and finish by Jennings which earned applause from Chester fans and Tykes alike. Here are some thoughts…
1. Team selection
While putting Heneghan on right wing seemed to work away at Barnsley I don’t think it worked last night. He was roaming across the midfield getting stuck in but he wasn’t in position enough as an outlet for Kay to pass to. Playing Kay at right back does work in a crisis but when we have the regular right back available surely we should be playing him there? While Heneghan is a great young player moving him around all the time won’t help him develop and he struggled last night, as did Kay.
2. Up top
Hobson had a poor game. Really tough on his own against two experienced centre backs but he seemed to just want to win fouls. Didn’t do too much in the build up which made it difficult for the team to create clear cut chances. I think he is a good player and he has played much better this season, including against Barnsley in the last round, but he’ll want to forget last night.
3. Gareth Roberts
Our stand out performer last night. Enjoyed his jaffa cakes and did a brilliant tackle in the first half to stop a certain goal. How he is that fast at 36 I’ll never know but long may his form continue! Also Worsnop deserves a mention for a few very good saves.
Looked professional tonight. Put us under pressure in the first half, took their chance and as we pushed on and our shape went they kept theirs and punished us. Showed the difference in the leagues which is exactly what we didn’t want. Beaten by the better team on the night. Ah well. There’s always the FA Trophy.
