MATCH BLOG – Cambridge United 0 Chester FC 1

Chester took a deserved three points against 2nd placed Cambridge United through a Danny Carlton goal in the first half. Chester had a chance to seal it in the second period but Andy Bond blasted over when well placed. Aaron Chapman was the last hero on the day when he pulled the ball off of the player who had just managed to get round him before he was going to put it in an empty net. Here are some thoughts from the match….

1. Back four

Immense today. Even Ashworth who I wasn’t particularly convinced about played great after Horan went off injured. Reduced them to mainly speculative efforts and set pieces. Jarrett and Bond marshalled well in front of them and all of the players put in a great shift defensively. Special mention to Menagh in that regard as well. Constantly sprinting after players to put a foot in and break down an attack before setting off again, a part of his game I wasn’t too convinced about before so it is great to see him improving.

2. Danny Carlton

Wasn’t too pleased he was picked in front of Hobson but got his goal – a two yard header – which is what he is on the pitch for. Played fairly well but you can tell he isn’t comfortable as a target man. When Hobson came on we instantly kept the ball higher up the pitch for longer. Did enough to keep his place at the front of the 4-5-1 if we go for that vs Salisbury though. Maybe just bring him off slightly earlier.

3. Crowd

306 Chester fans went down and it was non stop signing. Really good atmosphere in a good ground. Hope Cambridge go up to be honest. Nice set up and I couldn’t handle that bus journey for a while.

4. Last match

Just need to equal Hereford’s result and we are safe. Most important match since we reformed next week. Bring your voice.
