BLOG – Barnsley 0-0 Chester

A great performance from the Blues was not quite enough to see us into the Third Round, though we will be in the draw on Monday. The game saw Chester hit the crossbar, have the ball cleared off the line twice and force the Barnsley keeper into an amazing save, though Barnsley rallied late on and Kay (I think) brilliantly cleared off the line in the last minute. Overall it was a extremely well-earned replay with someone in the pub summing it up nicely: “That’s the best result we’ve had since we reformed, and we’re all gutted!” Here are some thoughts on the game.

1. Following

Wow! What a superb away day! Taking 2,143 away is superb. The atmosphere was great, the noise was great, yeah we’re not the biggest club in the world, but when we’re up for it, we’re up for it. That day will live long in the memory.

2. Kay, Heneghan, Charnock, Brown

I was wondering before the match who Burr would replace Matty Hughes with. I thought it’d be between Menagh and Touray. I was pretty surprised when Heneghan was playing right midfield then! It was a great call from Burr and Heneghan’s extra defensive ability was just what we needed on the right. All of the defenders were excellent today – I’m struggling to decide whether Kay, Charnock or Brown made the best block!

3. Worsnop

The age they took to make a decision on whether to keep him on or not was worrying. I was very happy when he carried on, but then finding out post-match that he’d had a tooth knocked out and fractured his cheekbone? Absolutely heroic to be fair!

4. Chances…

Mahon’s shot was met with an amazing save, we had one disallowed for offside, someone somehow hit the crossbar early on, had two cleared off the line…. argh! We should have won that game. Barnsley were pretty poor, their keeper, number 5 and 11 aside, and we did everything we could. It’s annoying but you have to be pleased with the performance really.

Well the replay is in a week or so, but we’re in the FA Trophy before that. I’m not delighted about playing Telford, but I’m really enjoying these cup runs….

COYB!

thought you were unlucky yesterday afternoon. Played really well and got your tactics right. Great support as well, making lots of noise to encourage your team, although everyone of them looked up for it, unlike many of ours. Hopefully we can’t play as bad in the replay which I’m looking forward. Best of luck for the rest of the season, with the exception of the 16th.

I fear the chance of an upset may have passed us by, Barnsley are now aware of our team and tactics. However, the TV money from the replay will boost our coffers, which is fantastic and, who knows, we may be able to buy a striker for the second half of the season!
